(Washington, D.C.) — The Maryland State Golf Association (MSGA) and the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) are excited to announce a partnership to enhance golf initiatives in Washington, D.C. The MSGA and VSGA have a long-standing history of supporting competitive golf, and this partnership aims to formalize a structured and recurring investment in the D.C. golf landscape.
As part of this partnership, the DC Amateur Championship's hosting structure will alternate between the MSGA and VSGA. The MSGA will manage the event in 2025 and 2027, while the VSGA will take the lead in 2026. This collaborative hosting arrangement ensures that both organizations play an integral role in the championship, with all proceeds directed toward the D.C. Golf Initiative. The 2025 DC Amateur Championship is slated to take place at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, Maryland from August 7-9.
Additionally, clubs from Maryland and Virginia will be invited to join the Summer Team Matches as part of this partnership. The MSGA and VSGA will jointly coordinate outreach efforts to their respective clubs, with clubs that have participated in the event over the last three years receiving initial invites. A representative from each organization will be present at the Summer Team Finals to ensure joint oversight and engagement. Round one for the Summer Team Matches will take place on Saturday, July 5, at various locations.
"We are excited to partner with the MSGA to continue the playing of two historic Washington Metropolitan Golf Association events (WMGA),” said VSGA Executive Director Matt Smiley. “The Summer Team Matches and DC Amateur are tremendous competitive playing opportunities for golfers in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. On top of that, I'm proud of the decision of our associations to create a joint initiative to support the National Links Trust Championship.”
The partnership includes a structured annual contribution of $20,000 to support the National Links Trust Championship, which will assist public golfers in their journey to the Championship. This funding amount will be achieved through the proceeds from the DC Amateur and the Summer Team Matches. Should there be any shortfall, the remaining funds will be covered by the non-hosting association.
National Links Trust (NLT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to positively impacting communities and changing lives through affordable and accessible municipal golf. The National Links Trust Championship is the premier national competition for men and women, open exclusively to public-access golfers ages 25 and older. The 2025 edition of the championship will take place at East Potomac Golf Course in Washington, D.C., October 17-19.
“This partnership is about more than operations—it’s about impact. By combining the strengths of the MSGA, VSGA, and the legacy of the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association (WMGA), we’re creating a unified vision for golf in the D.C. region,” said MSGA Executive Director Kelly Newland, PGA. “Supporting initiatives like the National Links Trust Championship is the perfect outlet for this—we’re committed to expanding opportunity, strengthening community connections, and helping the game grow throughout the D.C. metro area.”
The MSGA and VSGA invite the community and media to join in celebrating this significant step toward a better future for golf in the nation’s capital.
