MIDLOTHIAN -- Heritage Golf Group added another club to its Virginia portfolio with the acquisition of Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Heritage announced on Wednesday.
Independence becomes the fourth VSGA member club under Heritage’s umbrella, joining The Dominion Club in Glen Allen, Spring Creek Golf Club in Zion Crossroads, and 1757 Golf Club in Dulles. Nationwide, Independence is the 50th club in Heritage’s portfolio.
“When we started growing Heritage Golf Group, our goal was never simply to build a larger portfolio of clubs,” Heritage CEO Mark Burnett said. “We believed there was an opportunity to build a company that put people first, invested meaningfully in its clubs, and gave strong local teams the support and freedom to create great experiences for their members and guests. Reaching 50 clubs is certainly a milestone worth celebrating, but what means the most is the impact we’ve been able to make at each club.”
Independence has been recognized as one of Central Virginia’s premier semi-private golf destinations and event venues. Featuring 27 holes of golf, including the Championship Course and the nine-hole par-3 Bear Course, Independence has hosted 13 State Opens of Virginia, four Women’s Opens of Virginia, and six Senior Opens of Virginia. It also was the stroke-play qualifying co-host for the 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
The Championship Course has been consistently recognized by Golf Digest as one of the state’s top public golf courses and currently ranks No. 18 in Virginia. It offers five sets of tees ranging from approximately 5,000 yards to more than 7,100 yards, providing an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all skill levels. The Bear Course offers a unique experience with walking rounds, footgolf, and disc golf, making the club an inviting destination for families, beginners, and seasoned players alike.
Independence is home to Tavern 19, a public restaurant serving elevated clubhouse favorites in a relaxed setting with indoor and outdoor dining overlooking the course. It has also become one of Richmond’s premier destinations for private events, including weddings, golf outings, corporate meetings, conferences and social celebrations in a variety of versatile event spaces.

Independence is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026. The original Tom Fazio designed Championship Course underwent an extensive redesign spearheaded by Lester George in 2014.
