KILMARNOCK -- For the third time in four years, the Chesapeake duo of Xander Goboy and Trey Marrion were victorious in the MAPGA/VSGA Junior Four-Ball Championship. The 11th playing of the event concluded on Sunday at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club.
Goboy and Marrion opened Sunday tied for the lead after the pair posted a 7-under-par 65 on Saturday. A second-round 9-under 63 left the pair six shots clear of the field, their two-day aggregate total of 16-under 128 giving them the victory over Blacksburg's Major Ewing and Cameron Sharp, who finished at 10-under 134. Arlington's Jacob Foti and Charlie Lamb tied for third with Matthew Pack of Chantilly and Benjamin Baker of Broadlands after both sides posted two-day totals of 8-under 136.
Both Goboy (N.C. State) and Marrion (Illinois) are committed to Division I programs. They won the Junior Four-Ball title in 2022 at CC of Petersburg by three strokes. In 2021, they won by one stroke at Kingsmill Resort's Plantation Course.
Goboy and Marrion entered Sunday's second and final round tied with Talon Dingledine and Elijah Felty after both sides carded 65s on Saturday. They remained tied through two holes on Sunday but Goboy and Marrion began to pull away on the par-5 3rd hole. Goboy made birdie there, while Dingledine made double bogey, a three-shot swing. Goboy added birdies at Nos. 4 and 8 and made an eagle on the par-5 9th, allowing the side to make the turn at 5-under. Goboy added three more birdies on the inward nine, and Marrion contributed with a birdie on the final hole. Dingledine and Felty posted an even-par 72 for the day to fall out of contention.
Goboy tied Foti for the weekend lead with 11 birdies. He was one of two players to make an eagle, with Joseph Winston being the other.
