The margins in the 42nd edition of the Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches were thin all weekend. Fittingly, possession of Ye Ole Feudin' Stick came down to a matter of inches.
West Virginia's Cory Hoshor had a 2-foot putt for birdie that would have clinched West Virginia's first victory in the matches since 2009. Instead, he rammed it past the hole and had to settle for par in Sunday's final singles match, giving Ryan Rettberg a 1-up win and leaving the matches tied 14-14.
Because Virginia won last year, it retains the trophy for another year. Since 2009, Virginia has won 14 times and two matches ended in 14-all ties, this year's and the 2018 matches at Olde Mill Resort.
The teams entered Sunday singles tied at 7, and Virginia got out of the gates quickly, with super seniors Tim Kelley and Jack Allara winning their matches. Virginia held a 2-1-1 advantage in senior matches, with Paras Pandya and Scott Shingler winning and Steve Serrao salvaging a half-point against Chris Daniels.
West Virginia went 4-1-1 in the first five singles matches, with Sam O'Dell, Chris Williams, Noah Mullens, and Davey Jude winning. Christian Brand nabbed a half-point thanks to a tie with Bobby Dudeck. Ryan Stinnett secured a key point for Virginia, beating Owen Elliott 4 and 3, and Cam Roam got West Virginia to 14 points by topping Stephen Bain 5 and 4.
That left the Rettberg-Hoshor match to decide things. Rettberg had to win to get Virginia to the 14-point finish line and led 2-up through 10 holes. Hoshor chipped away, winning 11 and 14 to tie the match. Rettberg won 17 with a birdie to go back 1 up, meaning he merely needed to match Hoshor on the final hole to win. Rettberg made par, and Virginia exhaled after Hoshor missed his birdie putt.
Mullens and Rettberg each went 3-0-0 for their respective teams.
The matches will return to Virginia next April.
Day 1: Matches tied after partner play
Virginia won the opening four-ball session, and West Virginia answered by winning the afternoon foursomes session, leaving the 42nd Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches tied at 7 heading into Sunday's singles session at Guyan Golf & Country Club.
Virginia took the morning four-ball session on Saturday 4-3, with the sides of Drew Brockwell and Ryan Stinnett; Stephen Bain and Ryan Rettberg; Marshall Tinsley and Brandon Ramsuer; and Jack Allara and Tim Kelley winning their matches. West Virginia swept the two senior matches, with Jonathan Clark and John Bumgarner and Pat Carter and Chris Daniels securing victories. WV regulars Noah Mullens and Christian Brand also won their matches. Only one match -- Clark and Bumgarner's 2-up win over Kevin Dillard and Scott Shingler -- reached the 18th hole.
In foursome (alternate shot) play, Mullens and Brand won for a second time, as did Carter and Daniels. West Virginia also got wins from Cory Hoshor and Owen Elliott, and super senior side Bob Clark and Scott Bibbee to secure a tie heading into Sunday's 14 singles matches.
