Format: Two rounds of four-ball stroke play. Shotgun starts both days: Monday at 12 p.m. and Tuesday at 9 a.m. Championship is split into three age divisions: 65+, 70+, 75+. Players are placed in divisions based on the younger player in the side. (e.g., if there is a 65 year old playing with a 72 year old, they'll play in the 65+ division). Round 2: Exciting finishes in 65+ and 70+ age divisions
WILLIAMSBURG -- Haymarket's David Prokop and Great Falls' Mark Boedicker repeated as champions in the 65+ division at the 11th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Four-Ball Championship on Tuesday at Two Rivers Country Club. Joining them in the winners' circle were 70+ champions Bob Rotella of Keswick and Charles Green III of Bristol, and 75+ winners J.P. Leigh of Suffolk and Glenn Morris of Portsmouth.
The 65+ and 70+ divisions were decided by final hole birdies. Boedicker sank a 33-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to move his side to 9-under 133 for the 36-hole championship. "He may have jumped higher than I did," Boedicker said of Prokop's celebration afterward. A birdie on the 9th hole was the decisive shot for Green and Rotella, who finished at 6-under 136 to finish a shot clear of three sides.
In the 75+ division, Leigh and Morris posted an 11-under total of 131 to finish two strokes clear of hard-charging Walter Anderson and Lou Moelchert, who shot 67 on Tuesday to finish at 9-under 133.
Notable:
- Prokop and Boedicker won last summer at Boonsboro Country Club when Boedicker scrambled to save par on No. 18, giving his side a one-shot victory. Their final-hole birdie was needed on Tuesday, as Harry Thomas and David Partridge made a birdie on their final hole to get to 8-under 134. Prokop and Boedicker's 5-under 67 was tied for the second best score Tuesday, just behind the 66 shot by Paul Gural and Mike Howell.
- Boedicker's birdie on 18 came just after his side had made bogey on the par-3 17th.
- Thomas and Partridge finished as runner-up in this event for the third time in the last four years.
- This marked the first time that there was a repeat champion in either the 65+ division or the old single-age division. The VSGA went to age groups starting in 2020. George Owens and John Casstevens won back-to-back titles in the 75+ division in 2021 and 2022, but that streak was halted in 2023. They shot 71 to finish at 5-under 139, six strokes behind Leigh and Morris.
- Green and Rotella, which won in 2017 at The Homestead's Old Course, won their first 70+ title. They shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. The only side to break 70 in that division was Mike Ancel and Jim Wood, who finished at 4-under 140, two strokes behind the leader.
- The three sides that tied for second in the 70+ were John Osborne and Bill Engel, Bill Guerrant and Jay Klingel, and Steve Isaacs and Rick Bendall.
- Leigh and Rotella each won their third title in this event. Rotella was on the winning side of the 70+ division last year but partnered with Don Robertson.
Quoteable:
- "I played the best round of golf I've ever played here on Monday, a bogey-free 68. I've never even come close to that here." -- Boedicker.
- "Today, Dave eagles No. 3, and we just got off to a really great start. I hit it to 3 feet on No. 9 and made the putt to get us to 5-under for the round, and then it was just like, hang on. And we did." -- Boedicker
- "It was a struggle coming in with the wind. The golf course played really, really hard this afternoon." -- Prokop
- "But it was a fair test. I just happened to make a long putt on 18. Just very grateful." -- Boedicker
- "It's amazing. Last year we won by one stroke. This year we win by one stroke. It's just so hard to win any of these things. We're very fortunate." -- Prokop
Round 1: Three sides tied atop 65+ division
(Pictured: Harry Thomas)
WILLIAMSBURG -- Three sides shot 5-under-par rounds of 67 on Monday at Two Rivers Country Club to share the lead in the 65+ age division of the 11th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Four-Ball Championship.
John Steele and Randy Thomas; Harry Thomas and David Partridge; and Steve Williams and George Riefler all posted 67s to share the 18-hole lead in the 65+. Four other sides were within two strokes of the lead. Defending champions David Prokop and Mark Boedicker were tied with Bert Allen and John Bruce at 4-under 68. Dave Pulk and Tim Vigotsky were tied for sixth at 3-under 69 with Richard Conner and Curtis Henley.
The two other age divisions featured solo leaders after 18 holes.
Steve Isaacs and Rick Bendall toured Two Rivers in 5-under 67, one shot better than three sides that were tied at 4-under 68 -- William Flanders and Byron Harrod; Bill Guerrant and Jay Klingel; and Charles Green III and Bob Rotella.
One side took control in the 75+ age division, with J.P. Leigh and Glenn Morris shooting the round of the day, an 8-under 64 that left them four shots clear of the two sides tied for second: Walter Anderson and Lou Moelchert and John Casstevens and George Owens.
The second and final round begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
Notable:
- Steele and Thomas finished with five birdies in a bogey-free round. Steele paired with Bill Apple to win the 65+ title in 2021 at Princess Anne Country Club.
- Partridge and Thomas have twice been runner-up in the 65+ division. They finished with six birdies but a bogey on No. 11 dropped them into a tie for the lead.
- Allen and Bruce, members at Boonsboro Country Club, started on No. 14 and going quickly, making three straight birdies on 15, 16 and 17. Their lone bogey came on No. 10.
- Pulk, a member at Two Rivers, is a two-time Senior Open of Virginia champion.
- Flanders and Harrod are both members at Two Rivers. They made five birdies and a bogey on No. 14. Flanders is a past Super Senior Four-Ball champ, winning in 2016 with Mike McDonald.
- Green and Rotella won the Super Senior Four-Ball title in 2017 at The Homestead's Old Course.
- Leigh and Morris made nine birdies, including a stretch of five birdies in a six-hole stretch from 10-15. They also worked around a bogey on No. 5.
- Owens and Casstevens have won two straight 75+ titles. Anderson was the 75+ champion at last year's VSGA Super Senior Amateur.
