POWHATAN -- Hermitage Country Club in Manakin Sabot posted an impressive 16-under-par 128 on Monday at The Foundry Golf Club to roll to a nine-stroke victory at the 80th Virginia State Golf Association Club Championship.

Hermitage won its first outright Club Championship since 2003. The club shared the title with The Federal Club in 2018.

It was clear early that there would be no sharing of the title this time around. Both of Hermitage's four-ball sides -- Ben Beach and Jordan Utley, and Sam Beach and Pete Toole -- returned 8-under-par rounds, which was a better round than any team in the field could muster on Monday.

Belle Haven Country Club of Alexandria and Westwood Country Club of Vienna set the pace in the morning wave, each shooting rounds of 5-under-par 139. Hermitage tied that mark by the 6th hole and then went on a birdie blitz on the back, shooting a combined 11-under to run away from the field.

Independence Golf Club of Midlothian, featuring Cam Young, Hank Klein, Elliott Wilson and Scott Bemberis, finished a distant second at 7-under 137. Belle Haven (Brandon Cigna, Rob Menefee, Steve Mote, Chad Moseley) and Westwood (Matt Gallagher, Robert Nuon, Chris French, Chris Stout) tied for third.

This marked the seventh-straight playing of this event that a Richmond-area club emerged victorious. The last non-RVA winner came in 2015 when Army Navy CC and Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club shared the title.
