Horton/Kane win 10th VSGA Mixed Four-Ball Tournament

WILLIAMSBURG -- The side of Adam Horton (Elizabeth Manor G&CC) and Mallory Kane (Bide-A-Wee GC) posted a 9-under-par 62 on Wednesday to win the gross title in the 10th Virginia State Golf Association Mixed Four-Ball Tournament, held at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club's Gold Course. Horton and Kane finished three strokes clear of Farmington CC members Amy Ellertson and Philip Mahone.

CONSISTENT ROUND: Horton and Kane posted 31s on each nine on Wednesday. They gained separation by starting hot. Starting the shotgun round on No. 4, Kane made birdie on No. 4 and eagle on No. 5 while both players made birdie on No. 6 to put the side at 4-under after three holes. They also picked each other up when one partner faltered. Kane made a key par on No. 12 when Horton made double bogey, and Horton returned the favor by making birdie on No. 13 when Kane made bogey.

NOTABLE: Kane is the head women's golf coach at Old Dominion University. Horton was a four-time All-American at Methodist University and is a member of the school's athletics Hall of Fame.

TOP FIVE: Rounding out the top five in the gross division were Mike Ancel (Newport News GC)/Casey Burley (Kiln Creek GC & Resort) and Rica Rohrbaugh/Kevin MacMillan (Brandermill CC), who each shot 4-under rounds of 67; and Shabril Derco/Cameron Robinett (Cedar Point Club) and Randy Leyshon (Meadowcreek GC)/Amy Phelan (1757 GC), who tied for fifth at 3-under 68.

NET WINNERS: Don and Donna Bohlin (Wintergreen Resort) won the net division, besting Al and Karen Lavallee (Lakeside Park Club) thanks to a better back-nine score after both sides posted 10-under rounds of 61. The Bohlin duo shot 30 on the back, one better than the Lavallees.

GROSS FLIGHT WINNERS: The Bohlins won the second flight with their 2-under 69. Debbie Hersman and Phillip Plummer (VSGA eClub) were the third flight winners with a 3-over 74.

NET FLIGHT WINNERS: The Bohlins won the net second flight, while the Lavallees were winners in the net third flight.
