ZION CROSSROADS -- The father-son combo of Ray and Talon Dingledine posted a 15-under-par 57 on Wednesday at Spring Creek Golf Club to win the 5th Virginia State Golf Association Parent-Child Championship.
The Dingledines tied with the father-son combo of David and Joey Jordan but won via the USGA Scorecard Tiebreak Method, as the Dingledines posted a better score (29) than the Jordans (31) on the back nine.
The Dingledines (Stonehenge G&CC) went out in the morning shotgun wave and started on No. 16. After a par-par start, they got their round going with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole. They were 4-under through eight holes then made a birdie on the par-4 6th. They closed their round by going 11-under over their final 10 holes, a run that included nine birdies and an eagle on the par-5 9th.
The Jordans (Willow Oaks CC) began on No. 1 in the afternoon shotgun and got off to a sizzling birdie-eagle start. They turned at 10-under but made four pars on the back nine and couldn't pass the Dingledines. They had a pair of 25-foot eagle putts on 18 but neither were able to convert.
Winners were crowned in age flights as well, with the age being the youngest player in the side.
In the 12-and-under flight, JJ and Jason Robertson (Blacksburg CC) were the winners, posting a 9-under 63, one shot better than Chase and Jeffery Evans (Army Navy CC). Hunter and Thomas Vlahakis (The Federal Club ) were third at 7-under 65.
As the Dingledines were the overall champions, Aydan and Charles Smith (Salisbury CC) won first place in the 13-15 flight at 11-under 61, one shot better than Adam and Laddie Decker (Independence GC) and Matt and William Bascom (Birdwood Golf at Boar's Head Resort).
The Jordans took first in the 16-29 flight, followed by John and Nicholas Owen (Indpendence GC) at 11-under 61 and Bill and Will Houtz (Meadowbrook CC) at 9-under.
Alex and Philip Mahone (Farmington CC) won the 30-and-over flight with an 11-under 61, one shot better than David (Belmont GC) and Michael Walder (Dovercourt GC). Garry and Thomas Sutterfield (Hobbs Hole GC) were third at 9-under 63.
