LAUREL FORK -- The Carolinas team jumped to a 20.5-15.5 lead over the Virginias on Monday in the 65th Women's Virginias-Carolinas Matches, held at Olde Mill Resort.
The matches feature players from the Virginia State Golf Association and West Virginia Golf Association facing off against their counterparts from the Carolinas Golf Association, which include players from North and South Carolina.
The teams played four-ball match play on Monday. On Tuesday, the teams will play Pinehurst Alternate Shot Match Play. Action will wrap up Wednesday with singles play for the 24 players from each team. Matches are split into front nine play, back nine play and overall play, with a point available in each.
Four sides from the Virginias team won matches on Monday: Sydney Grimes and Torren Kalaskey; Cathleen Wong and Susan Glasby; Julie Shin and Mallory Kane; and Natalie Easterly and Amy Ellertson. Shin and Kane secured all three points for the Virginias in their win over Gracyn Burgess and Smith Knaffle.
Six sides from the Carolinas team won their matches: Mallory Fobes and Emily Rapp; Nicole Adam and Kayla Dowell; Victoria Cook and Kennedy Gooding; Pam Prescott and Toni Notaro; Sarah Phillips-Durst and Chrissie Spidell; and Kerry Rutan and Patty Moore. Three of those sides secured all three points for the Carolinas: Adam/Dowell, Prescott/Notaro and Rutan/Moore.
