SPOTSYLVANIA — The twin sister duo of Jessica and Sarah Spicer already made their mark on the national four-ball scene in April, having advanced to match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in Puerto Rico.
Saturday at Fawn Lake Country Club, they kept their strong play rolling, opening a four-shot lead after 18 holes in the open division at the 6th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Four-Ball Championship. The second and final round is scheduled to begin Sunday morning.
In the senior division, five-time champions Amy Ellertson (Farmington CC) and Natalie Easterly (CC of Virginia) hold the lead, but it does not appear that they’ll run away from the field as they have in years past. They hold a two-shot edge over three sides heading into Sunday’s second round: Joanne Kitusky (The Dominion Club) and Shelley Savage (Army Navy CC); Andrea Miller/Cindy Thompson (The Club at Glenmore) and Cindy Hollingshead/Maria Humphrey (Hermitage CC).
The Spicers, who played collegiately at Virginia Tech, posted an 11-under par 62 and enter Sunday with a four-stroke lead over defending champions Lauren Greenlief (International CC) and Alexandra Austin (Springfield G&CC). Sarah Spicer is a member at Meadowbrook CC; Jessica at Cypress Point CC.
The sisters posted a bogey-free round that featured 11 birdies. They roared out of the gates by making birdies on each of their first seven holes on their way to a front-nine 29. They cooled off after that, but still played their final 11 holes in 4 under par.
Greenlief and Austin, who also advanced to match play in Puerto Rico, returned a 7-under-par 66, a bogey-free round that featured seven birdies. They shot 33 on each nine.
Julie Shin (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) and Sydney Hackett (1757 GC) are five shots back after posting a 6-under 67. They’re tied for third with VSGA Junior Golf Circuit members Ashnoor Kaur and Maria Isabella Errichetto, who also shot 6-under 67.
Ellertson and Easterly were the only side to post an under-par score in the senior division, shooting a 1-under 72 that featured two birdies and one bogey.
