WILLIAMSBURG—Williamsburg Golf Club’s Richard Conner used a pair of net eagles in Tuesday’s second round to secure the overall title at the 2nd Virginia State Golf Association Net Amateur Championship, held at Conner’s home course.

Conner posted a net two-day total of 140, shooting 71 on Monday and 69 on Tuesday, to finish a stroke clear of Pleasant Valley Golf Club’s Craig Warnick and Stonewall Golf Club’s Paul Pierce, each of whom returned two-day totals of 141.

Conner, a 3 handicap, received strokes on holes No. 1, 16 and 18, and he took full advantage of those extra shots. He made a birdie on No. 1 for a net eagle, a birdie on No. 16 for a net eagle; and a par on No. 18 for a net birdie.

Warnick, a 5 handicap, took advantage of the holes he got a stroke on as well on Tuesday, shooting a 5-under net 66 thanks to three net eagles, two net birdies and two natural birdies. He also made four bogeys, which ultimately left him behind Conner on the leaderboard.

Pierce, a 9 handicap, opened with a 72 and closed with a 69 that included four net birdies on the back nine.

Williamsburg GC’s Curtis Hanley was fourth at 142. David Dooley (Nottoway River CC) and Dennis Drost (Kiln Creek GC) each shot two-day totals of 143 to finish tied for fifth.
