Winners crowned at 14th VSGA Youth Championship

WILLIAMSBURG — Winners were crowned in six age divisions at the 14th Virginia State Golf Association Youth Championship, which concluded Tuesday at Kingsmill Resort’s Plantation Course.

In the boys 12-13 flight, Christiansburg’s Jake Albert shot 73 Tuesday for a two-round aggregate 2-under-par 140 to win the title by six strokes over Boones Mill’s Carson Moore. Wytheville’s David Goode shot the best round of the day in the 12-13 flight, a 1-over 72 that moved him into third with a two-day 148.

Albert shot 67 in Monday’s first round. Tuesday, he made a birdie on No. 7 and shook off back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12 to finish with six straight pars and secure the win.

For the second straight day, the round of the day came from the boys 10-11 flight, where Yorktown’s Brandon Sipe returned a 3-under 68 and finished with a two-day aggregate 8-under 134. Sipe won by 13 shots over runner-up John Carlin of Ashburn. Virginia Beach’s Cayden Fulinara shot a 1-over 72 on Tuesday to move into third place at 149.

Sipe was 1 over for the day when he dunked his approach shot from 38 yards out on the par-4 11th hole for an eagle. He added a birdie on 12 and another birdie on 16 for a back-nine 32. Fulinara punctuated his strong round with an eagle on the par-4 18th.

In the girls 12-13 flight, Alexis Danielle Goboy shot a two-day 159 to finish seven shots clear of fellow Chesapeake resident Chelsea Kim. The girls 10-11 flight winner was Alexandria’s Isabel Vizgaitis, who tied for the title at 176 with Glen Allen’s Alison Oh but won on a back-nine match of cards. They finished two shots clear of Ashburn’s Katherine Yun.

There were also two divisions of nine-hole competition for players ages 9 and under. Virginia Beach’s Hunter Staton won the boys title with a two-day 80, 10 shots better than Arlington’s Charlie Wisniewski. Virginia Beach’s Ada Inderlied posted a two-day 81 to clip Chesterfield’s Jasmine Limm by one shot in the girls 9-under flight.
