ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - The eight-player Virginia squad took an overwhelming lead over the eight-player Maryland team after Saturday four-ball and cruised to a 28-8 victory in the 22nd Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls' Matches, held at Turf Valley Country Club this past weekend.
Virginia won the Poindexter Cup for the fourth straight year and extended its overall series edge over Maryland to 18-3-1.
The event featured four four-ball matches on Saturday and eight singles matches on Sunday. Points were allocated for the front nine, the back nine and the overall match.
Virginia won nine of the available 12 points on Saturday. Danielle Suh and Isabel Bae, and Julie Shin and Sue Lee each won all three points available in their matches. Suh and Bae's 3-and-2 win over Faith Choi and Jenny Hua included a 2-and-1 win on the front and a 1-up victory on the back. Shin and Lee defeated Emma Chen and Kayleigh Zeman 6 and 4, winning 4 and 3 on the front and 3 and 1 on the back.
Melanie Walker and Ester Choi grabbed two of the three points in their match with Elizabeth Coffren and Fannie Sukhamparnich. Maryland's only overall win came from Sophie Simon and Elizabeth Tucci, who defeated Amber Mackiewicz and Emma Landis 2 and 1. Mackiewicz and Landis won five straight holes on the front to earn a point with a 4-and-2 win on that side.
Virginia won 19 of the available 24 singles points on Sunday, with Shin, Choi, Bae and Lee winning all three points in their respective matches. Simon secured the only victory for Maryland, a 2-up win over Walker.
The event is scheduled to return to Virginia in 2021.
