DANIELS, W. Va. -- The Virginias team, looking for its second straight win on home soil, will enter the final day of the 63rd Women's Virginias-Carolinas Matches with a slim lead after outscoring the Carolinas squad by a point in Pinehurst Modified Alternate Shot play.
A day after taking a two-point edge in four-ball play, the Virginias squad edged the Carolinas 18.5-17.5 in Pinehurst Modified Alternate Shot Tuesday at Glade Springs Resort's Stonehaven Course and will take a 37.5-34.5 lead into Wednesday's singles matches.
The matches are a competition between players from the Virginia State Golf Association and West Virginia Golf Association, and players from the Carolinas Golf Association, representing both North and South Carolina.
Three points are available in each match, one each to the winner of the front nine, the winner of the back nine, and the winner of the overall match.
Three Virginias sides had perfect three-point days on Tuesday. Jillian Drinkard and Diana Domenech took all three points in a 4-and-3 victory over Madison Moosa and Keri Kenkel.
The coach-player combination of Mallory Hetzel and Abigail Portyrata had a perfect day in a 2-and-1 win over Jodee Tindal and Gracyn Burgess. Hetzel is Old Dominion's women's golf coach; Portyrata recently completed her ODU eligibility.
The final three-point win for the Virginias came from Mimi Hoffman and Natalie Easterly, who bested Leigh Coulter and Linda Daniel 1 up.
The Virginias also got 2.5 points from Jayde Dudley and Naomi Mitchell and two points each from Mariah Hopkins and Andrea Miller, and from Adeena Shears and Kristin Shifflett.
