SUFFOLK – The Virginia State Golf Association team dominated both days at the 21st Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Matches, cruising to a 8½-3½ victory at Cedar Point Country Club.
Virginia won the Poindexter Cup for the third straight year.
The teams played four-ball matches on Saturday and singles matches on Sunday,
with one point available in each match.
In Saturday’s four-ball competition, Virginia won three of
the four matches to take a 3-1 lead heading into Sunday. Becca DiNunzio and
Julie Shin defeated Sophie Simon and Paige Warren 3 and 2; Tatum Walsh and
Danielle Suh bested Faith Choi and Jenny Hua 3 and 2; and Kendall Turner and
Paris Fieldings recorded a 4-and-3 win over Bailey Davis and Faith McIlvain.
Elizabeth Coffren and Amanda Levy recorded Maryland’s lone
point with a 5-and-4 win over Rory Weinfurther and Jayde Dudley.
Virginia won five of the eight singles matches on Sunday and
earned a half point in another. DiNunzio, Suh, Weinfurther, Shin and Fieldings
all won their matches, and Dudley tied her match with Jenny Hua for the
additional half point.
Coffren and Simon won singles matches for Maryland.
The matches will return to Maryland in 2020.
