ROANOKE, W. Va. — For the 10th
straight year, Ye Olde Feudin’ Stick will remain in the Commonwealth of
Virginia.
Aided by a strong effort from
its seniors and super seniors in Sunday singles, the Virginia State Golf
Association won the 36th Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches on
Sunday at Stonewall Resort, defeating the West Virginia Golf Association 15½-12½
to retain the trophy.
Virginia is undefeated in the
event since 2009. The squads tied last year at Olde Mill in Laurel Fork.
Virginia leads the overall series 30-4-2.
Each team featured 14 players:
Eight regulars, six seniors (50 and older) and two super seniors (65 and
older). One point was available in each match.
Virginia held a two-point edge
heading into Sunday’s singles matches. Virginia led 4½-2½ after Saturday morning’s
foursomes (alternate shot) play. The teams split afternoon four-ball action on
Saturday, with each team earning 3½ points.
On Sunday, Virginia’s seniors
and super seniors earned 4 ½ points in six matches, with Leon Roday (Henrico), Rich
Buckner (Clifton), Scott Reisenweaver (Midlothian) and Buck Brittain (Tazewell)
each winning their matches. The match between Virginia’s John Hoffman (Fairfax)
and West Virginia’s Barry Knotts ended all square.
Additionally, Virginia earned
three of eight points in regular singles play to clinch the victory. Jimmy Delp
(Falmouth), Kyle Martin (Hampton) and Justin Young (Roanoke) each won their
matches.
Delp, Reisenweaver, Brittain and
Buckner all went 3-0 on the weekend to lead Virginia.
Chris Williams was the lone West
Virginian to go 3-0 on the weekend.
