Virginia Union wins 2018 VSGA Intercollegiate

SUFFOLK — Virginia Union University used a strong second round to vault past Randolph-Macon College and win the 2018 Virginia State Golf Association Intercollegiate Championship Tuesday at Sleepy Hole Golf Course.

RMC held a narrow three-shot lead heading into Tuesday’s second and final round. The Panthers, coached by past VSGA president Lee Coble, posted the tournament’s best round on Tuesday, a 293 that left them 11 strokes ahead of the field by the end of play.

Randolph-Macon shot 605 to finish second. Averett University was third at 607, followed by Christopher Newport University in fourth at 609 and the University of Mary Washington in fifth at 611.

The VSGA Intercollegiate features Division II and Division III schools from around the state. VUU is coming off a strong 2017-18 season in which it garnered an at-large bid to Division II regionals.

Hampden-Sydney’s Varun Yerramserri posted a two-day aggregate 143 to win the individual title by one stroke over VUU’s Allan Day and Randolph-Macon’s Trey Razzetti. Yerramserri shot 71 on Monday and posted 72 Tuesday. Day opened with a 73 and closed with a 71 on Tuesday. Razzetti posted 70 on Monday and returned 74 on Tuesday. Mary Washington’s Sebastian Bonte, the first-round leader after posting 69 on Monday, struggled to a 79 on Tuesday and finished tied for sixth.

All four of Virginia Union’s scoring players posted rounds of 75 or better on Tuesday, paced by Day’s 71. Sergio Escalante carded a 72 and Alkin Barkley and Travon Willis each posted 75s to round out VUU’s score. Escalante improved by seven shots from the first round to the second.

Razzetti led the way for RMC with his 74, followed by Alex Nelson at 75 and Chase Childers and Tom Schaffer, each of whom shot 79.

Victor Hole shot 70 to lead Averett. Samuli Ahvenoja posted a 75, followed by Ben Potter at 77 and Michael Allen at 77.
