PURCELLVILLE — The Virginia State Golf Association championship season concludes this week at Loudoun Golf & Country Club with the playing of the 3rd VSGA Mid-Senior Amateur Championship and the 24th VSGA Super Senior Amateur Championships. The events were rescheduled from late September after heavy rains rendered Loudoun’s layout unplayable.

The Mid-Senior Amateur Championship is for players ages 60-64. The Super Senior Amateur is divided into three age divisions: 65-69, 70-74, and 75 and over. One round of stroke play qualifying, held Tuesday, determined the participants and seeds for match play, which begins Wednesday.

Eight players advanced to match play in the Mid-Senior and 65-69 Super Senior division. Four players advanced in the 70-74 and 75-and-over divisions.

Mid-Senior Amateur

David Partridge (Hermitage CC) easily earned stroke-play medalist honors Tuesday, firing a 5-under-par 67 to finish five strokes clear of Tim Vigotsky (Robert Trent Jones GC). Partridge, a 12-time VSGA champion, will be the top seed in match play, which begins Wednesday morning with the quarterfinals.

Vigotsky returned an even-par 72. There was a wide gap between Partridge, Vigotsky and the rest of the field. Harry Thomas (Belle Haven CC) shot 76 to finish third, a stroke clear of Kurt Swenson (Lexington G&CC). The four other match-play participants are Richard Lion (Springfield G&CC), Ron Clatterbuck (Evergreen CC), Wil Fekeci (Laurel Hill GC) and David Prokop (Evergreen CC). Fekeci and Prokop finished one shot ahead of Craig Lund (Laurel Hill GC) and Mark Boedicker (Robert Trent Jones GC) for the final match-play spots.

Partridge birdied three of his first five holes Tuesday before hitting a rough patch near the turn. He fell back to even par with a bogey on No. 10 but recovered quickly with back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12. After a par on 13, he birdied the next three holes to get to 5 under. He shot 4-under 33 on the par-37 back nine.

Super Senior 65-69

Marc Halley, a member at nearby Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt Club, posted a 4-over 76 to earn the top seed in match play. He finished a shot ahead of Dayton Slater (Shenandoah Valley GC). Van McCarter (Blue Hills GC) returned 78 and will be the No. 3 seed for match play, followed by Corky Bishop (Spring Creek GC), who returned 79.

Five players tied at 80, with four advancing to match play after a playoff: Jeff Johns (Dominion Valley CC), Brian Maloney (Springfield G&CC), Bert Wilson (Jefferson Lakeside CC) and John Hoffman (Evergreen CC).

Halley finished with three birdies, including one on Loudoun’s par-3 closing hole.

Super Senior 70-74

Don Jeanes (Heritage Hunt G&CC) and Mike Brown (CC of Fairfax) each toured Loudoun’s layout in 6-over 78, with Brown earning the top seed in the four-player match play portion of the championship. Brown will face Charles Ballou (Belle Haven CC) in one semifinal with Jeanes facing Ray D’Amore (VSGA eClub Alexandria) in the other.

Jeanes and Brown each posted a pair of birdies in their stroke-play rounds. Ballou finished one shot ahead of Donald Meyer (Reston National GC) and Roger Carpenter (Blue Ridge CC) to earn the final match-play seed.

Super Senior 75 and over

Jack Vardaman (The Homestead), winner of the 33rd VSGA Super Senior Stroke Play Championship in June, posted a 7-over 79 to finish three shots ahead of Bob Moyers (Shenvalee GR) for medalist honors. Vardaman will meet David King (Trump National GC Washington D.C.) in one semifinal, with Moyers facing Joe Cochran (The Club at Ironwood) in the other.

Vardaman last won a VSGA Super Senior Amateur title in 2015, when he defeated Harry Cain in the championship match of the 75-and-over division at The Homestead.
