FREDERICKSBURG — Keswick’s Andrea Miller, Alexandria’s Jeanne Barton and Williamsburg’s Kristin Shifflett—all VSGA members—qualified for the upcoming U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Tuesday morning at Fredericksburg Country Club.
Miller (Glenmore CC) was the medalist by a wide margin, posting a 2-over-par 74 to finish seven strokes clear of Barton (Mount Vernon CC), who shot 81. Shifflett (Ford’s Colony CC) returned 82 to tie for third and earned her qualifying spot through a playoff with Jane Fitzgerald, who will be the first alternate.
Carol Davies, who shot 84, will be the second alternate.
The trio from Fredericksburg will join 2015 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion Lauren Greenlief in the championship proper, which will be held at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis from Sept. 22-27. Greenlief earned a 10-year exemption into the championship with her victory three years ago.
Miller, 48, was steady on Tuesday, finishing with two birdies and four bogeys, touring each of FCC’s nines in 37 strokes.
Barton’s lone birdie, on the par-3 12th hole, proved crucial to earning a spot, helping the 36-year-old finish a stroke clear of the two in the playoff for the final qualifying berth.
Shifflett became eligible for the championship for players ages 25 and older in March when she turned 25. She made par on her final four holes to get into the playoff.
