PINEHURST, N.C. — For just the second time, the Virginias-Carolinas Junior Boys’ Matches ended in a tie.
Sunday at The Country Club of North Carolina’s Cardinal Course, the Carolinas squad—featuring Carolinas Golf Association players from North and South Carolina—rallied in singles to secure an 8-8 tie with the Virginias team—featuring players from the Virginia State Golf Association and West Virginia Golf Association.
The last tie in the matches came in 2005 at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg. The Carolinas leads the series 20-14-2 and had won six of the last seven meetings before this weekend. The last two Carolinas victories came by slim 8½-7½ margins. Because the Carolinas won last year's matches, it retained the Vinny Giles trophy.
The Virginias used a strong afternoon session on Saturday to take a 4½-3½ lead into singles. The Carolinas led 2½-1½ after the morning alternate shot matches, but the Virginias responded by taking three of four points in afternoon four-ball.
Carolinas players Kenan Poole II and Spencer Oxendine won the final two singles matches on Sunday to forge the tie.
On the weekend, Chesterfield’s Drew Brockwell (GC at the Highlands) went 3-0, and Richmond’s Connor Johnson Jr. (CC of Virginia) went 2-1. Brockwell and Johnson, who will begin their Virginia Tech careers later this month, each won their singles match on Sunday.
Leesburg’s Matthew Monastero (Loudoun G&CC), who recently committed to play at the University of Virginia, also won his singles match.
The Virginias-Carolinas Junior Boys’ Matches will return to Boonsboro next August.
