HOT SPRINGS — Cheryl Grigg, a member at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, posted the lone even-par score of the day Monday during qualifying for the championship flight at the 61st Virginia State Golf Association Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at The Omni Homestead Resort’s Old Course, earning her medalist honors and the top seed for match play.

Grigg toured each of the Old Course’s nines in 36 strokes for an even-par 72, one better than Charlottesville’s Natalie Easterly, another CCV member who posted a 1-over-par 73.

Grigg bogeyed No. 2 but recovered with a birdie on the par-3 5th hole to get back to even par. After opening her back nine with a bogey on No. 10, she got back even again with a birdie on the par-4 13th hole. She finished her round with four straight pars.

Grigg will open the 16-player match-play portion of the event Tuesday morning against No. 16 seed Dot Bolling (Hidden Valley CC), one of five players who shot 7-over 79 on Monday and one of four from that group to survive a playoff for the final match-play spots.

Easterly will open match play against fellow CCV member Lindsay Wortham. Easterly bounced back from a double bogey on No. 2 with two straight birdies, then played the rest of her round at 1 over to finish in second.

Shelley Savage (Army Navy CC), who earlier this year won the VSGA Senior Women’s Stroke Play Championship, will be the No. 3 seed after posting a 3-over 75 on Monday. She’ll open match play against No. 14 seed Valeta Pittman (Roanoke CC).

Savage, a three-time Senior Women’s Amateur champion, was 1 under at the turn before running into trouble to start the back nine. She bogeyed No. 10 and double bogeyed No. 11 but settled back down with a birdie on No. 14.

The last two champions of this event—Springfield’s Mimi Hoffman (Belle Haven CC) and Vienna’s Mary Cabriele (CC of Fairfax)—advanced to the championship flight. Each shot 4-over 76 on Monday to finish in a six-way tie for fourth. Cabriele, who defeated Hoffman in last year’s title match, will open her title defense against Joan Gardner (Mount Vernon CC) as the No. 6 seed. Hoffman is the No. 9 seed and will face Fran Hensley (Gordon Trent GC) in Tuesday’s round of 16.

Those who did not qualify for the championship flight will participate in consolation brackets. Players who did not attempt to qualify for the championship flight will participate in match play in flights 1-6.
