Current St. Christopher’s School and future Virginia Tech teammates Connor Johnson Jr. and Drew Brockwell rode a sterling opening round to a four-shot victory in the 5th MAPGA/VSGA Junior Four-Ball Championship, held this past weekend at Ford’s Colony Country Club’s Marsh Hawk Course in Williamsburg.
Johnson (CC of Virginia) and Brockwell (GC at the Highlands) shot a 10-under 134 during two days at Marsh Hawk, taking command early with a first-round 64 on Saturday. After opening their round with a bogey on No. 1, the Johnson/Brockwell side carded eight birdies, including three in a row from Nos. 12-14.
Staked to a three-shot lead after the first round, Johnson and Brockwell played steady golf on Sunday, finishing with three birdies and a bogey for a 2-under-par 70.
They finished four strokes clear of runners-up Gerry Jones Jr. and Robb Kinder (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit), who finished with a two-day 138 after posting rounds of 67 and 71.
Caleb Choe (Bayville GC) and Jaron Leasure (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) shot the round of the day on Sunday, a 5-under 67. But after opening with an even-par 72, they were too far behind the leaders to catch up. Their aggregate 139 was good for third.
Two sides tied for fourth at 140: Sanjoon Yu (VSGA JGC)/Jae Song (The Piedmont Club) and Josh Brown/Hunter Martin (VSGA JGC).
