Virginia Union University, one of the nation’s oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), is honored to host the 68th Virginia State Golf Association Intercollegiate Championship Oct. 16-17 at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club in Richmond.
This year marks the first time that VUU men’s golf program will host the event, which features Division II and Division III schools from across Virginia. A field of 19 teams — one of the largest in the history of the event — will be competing in this year’s two-day championship, which was first played in 1949.
“The significance of this event will be difficult for some to embrace. Not only is it historic, but it brings tremendous exposure and experience for our golf program and the University,” VUU athletics director Joe Taylor said. “We are so very proud of Coach E. Lee Coble for his passion, his efforts and value to VUU Athletics.”
Stonehenge Golf & Country Club, an Ed Ault design which opened in 1971, has hosted numerous VSGA championships, including this year’s VSGA Super Senior Stroke Play Championship. It has also hosted USGA qualifiers and the Buy.com Tour (now Web.com Tour) in 2000 and 2001.
The mission of the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) is to promote the game of golf and serve the needs of golf in Virginia. The VSGA was organized in 1904 making it one of the oldest amateur golf association in the United States. Since those early days, the VSGA has grown from four clubs to more than 300 today and from a fledgling tournament-based association to a professional full-service organization.
“The Virginia State Golf Association believes in increasing ethnic diversity in its sponsored competitions, and ultimately, in the ongoing growth of its membership and volunteer base,” VSGA executive director Jamie Conkling said. “We are pleased that VUU, one of the nation’s oldest HBCUs, is hosting some of the state’s best collegiate golfers in such a strong competition.”
