Virginias' roster for 72nd Captain's Putter Matches set

MIDLOTHIAN — A pair of Virginia Golf Hall of Fame selections and four others who have won Virginia State Golf Association championships in 2017 highlight the Virginias’ roster for the 72nd Captain’s Putter Matches, which will be contested Oct. 20-21 at Greenville Country Club’s Chanticleer Course in Greenville, S.C.

The Captain’s Putter is an annual set of matches pitting top golfers from the VSGA and West Virginia Golf Association against top players from the Carolinas Golf Association (North and South Carolina). The Carolinas won last year’s event at Kinloch GC in Manakin-Sabot and leads the all-time series 48-21-1.

Virginia Golf Hall of Fame inductees Keith Decker (Chatmoss CC) and Vinny Giles (Kinloch GC) are on the Virginias’ roster, playing on the senior and super senior teams, respectively. Other 2017 VSGA champions on the roster are Michael Brennan (Junior Match Play); Buck Brittain (Senior Open of Virginia); Justin Young (Mid-Amateur); Decker (Senior Four-Ball); and Charles Green III (Super Senior Four-Ball).

West Virginia champions on the Virginias’ roster include Sam O’Dell (Amateur, Mid-Amateur); Harold Payne (Senior Amateur); and Chris Williams (Four-Ball).

Team captains are Giles, O'Dell and Gib Palmer, the immediate past VSGA president.
