The Virginia State Golf Association joins the rest of the world golf community in mourning Arnold Palmer, who died Sunday in Pennsylvania at the age of 87.
Palmer's impact on golf at every level cannot be understated. Though he was a seven-time major champion, what endeared him to the masses was his personality and spirit.
"To us, Arnold was a World Golf Hall of Fame Member," said Jack Peter, President of the World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum. "But as news stories will reveal, he was so much more than a legendary golfer. He was a global hero and one of the greatest humanitarians who ever lived. It's nearly impossible to start a conversation about the history of golf without mentioning Arnold's name in the first few sentences. He captured the hearts and minds of so many through his unmistakable golf swing, picturesque smile and larger-than-life personality. Mr. Palmer will be greatly missed and his legacy will forever be celebrated at the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum."
Palmer's golf course design prowess is on display throughout the Commonwealth, as his firm had a hand in architecture at several VSGA member clubs, including Bay Creek, Belmont Country Club, Dominion Valley Country Club, Fawn Lake Country Club, The Federal Club, The Kingsmill Resort's Plantation Course, The Regency at Dominion Valley and The Signature at West Neck.
Rest in peace, Arnie.
