Kurtis Grant, who won the 64th VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship last week at The Federal Club in Glen Allen, was one of eight players selected to the Virginias roster for the 34th Virginias-Carolinas Junior Boys Matches, which will be held this weekend at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C.
The Virginias squad, featuring players from the VSGA and West Virginia Golf Association, defeated the Carolinas squad, featuring players from North and South Carolina, 9½-6½ last summer at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, snapping the Carolinas’ four-year win streak. The Carolinas leads the all-time series 18-14-1.
Carolinas won 9-7 the last time the matches were at River Landing in 2014.
A closer look at the Virginias’ roster:
- Drew Brockwell (CC at the Highlands): Reached the quarterfinals of the 103rd VSGA Amateur; Qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
- Connor Burgess (Boonsboro CC): Reached match play at the 103rd VSGA Amateur; Medalist at a qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Championship at Willow Oaks CC; Won the Fox Puss Invitational; Finished T9 at 64th VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship.
- Kurtis Grant (Army Navy CC): Won the 64th VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship with a birdie on the 54th hole of the three-round event; Won the 1st VSGA Junior Golf Circuit Championship last fall.
- Connor Johnson Jr. (CC of Virginia): Reached round of 16 at the 103rd VSGA Amateur; medalist at a qualifier for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Salisbury CC.
- Dylan Taylor (The Dominion Club): Runner-up at the 64th VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship; Made the cut at the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia.
- Mason Williams (Pete Dye Golf Club, Bridgeport, W. Va.): Winner of the 2016 West Virginia Junior Match Play Championship.
- Rob Witherspoon (Meadowbrook CC): Reached match play at the 103rd VSGA Amateur Championship and the 26th VSGA Junior Match Play Championship.
- Teddy Zinsner (Belle Haven CC): Reached round of 32 at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship; Reached match play at the 103rd VSGA Amateur Championship; T15 at 64th VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship.
The Virginias-Carolinas Junior Boys Matches begin Saturday with foursomes and four-ball matches. The eight singles matches are slated for Sunday morning. One point is available in each match. Grover Walker (River Bend Club) and Ray Montgomery (Pleasant Valley GC) are the co-captains for the Virginias’ squad.
