ALEXANDRIA –- Lauren Greenlief and Jackie Rogowicz posted a 5-under 66 to dethrone defending champions Jessica Spicer and Sarah Spicer-Baldwin on Sunday in the Open Division of the 10th VSGA Women’s Four-Ball Championship at Mount Vernon Country Club.

The side accumulated a two-round total of 8-under 134 to clinch the victory, beating out the Spicer twins two-round total of 4-under 138.

“The Spicers play four-ball really well together,” Greenlief said. “They elevate each other’s game, and they typically make a lot of putts. I’m always expecting them to drain 20 footers when they play together.”

The side of Greenlief and Rogowicz trailed by one stroke heading into the second round, but this time was a long, 18-foot putt from Rogowicz to birdie on the 1st hole that sparked their championship clinching round.

This year’s VSGA Four-Ball Championship was Rogowicz’ first VSGA Championship, while Greenlief’s title marks her sixth VSGA Four-Ball Championship win. Rogowicz stayed at Greenlief’s house on Saturday night and the two took their minds off golf by watching the Kentucky Derby and NHL Playoffs.

The side only bogeyed twice throughout the championship, once during the first round and once on Sunday. The Spicer twins bogeyed three times on the back nine on Sunday, while Greenlief and Rogowicz posted three birdies.

In the Senior division, Bev Lane and Kristin Shifflett snuck by six-time defending champions Natalie Easterly and Amy Ellertson with a two-round total of 4-over 146. Easterly and Ellertson compiled a two-round total of 6-over 148.

Both Lane and Shifflett mentioned how the wind gusts of up to 20 miles per hour affected their game.

“The wind was really hard,” Lane said. “There were definitely not one but two club approaches that came into play.”

Shifflett added that the wind occasionally played with her head, which cost her a couple of strokes. Sunday’s championship win marks both Lane and Shifflett’s first VSGA Women's Four-Ball Championship victory.

In the Net division, Fort Belvoir GC's Oksan Hite and Won Hwang cruised to a two-round total of 13-under 129, which earned a seven stroke victory. The side earned three eagles during the championship, despite the VSGA Women's Four-Ball Championship being their first competitive tournament together.

Day 1: Defending champs hold slim Open division lead

ALEXANDRIA -- The twin sister duo of Jessica Spicer and Sarah Spicer-Baldwin posted a 4-under 67 on Saturday at Mount Vernon Country Club to take a one-stroke lead over Lauren Greenlief and Jackie Rogowicz in the Open Division of the 10th VSGA Women's Four-Ball Championship.

Seeking their third title in this event, the Spicers posted a bogey-free round that included four birdies. Greenlief and Rogowicz also carded four birdies, but both made bogey at the par-3 2nd hole, leaving them a stroke behind.

In the Senior division, Bev Lane and Kristin Shifflett returned a 1-over 72 and holds a two-stroke lead over the Fawn Lake Country Club duo of Becki Davis and Kit Burns. Seven-time champions Amy Ellerton and Natalie Easterly -- who have won this event every time they've entered -- are three strokes back after returning a 4-over 75.

Fort Belvoir GC's Oksan Hite and Won Hwang hold a commanding lead in the Net division, a 7-under 64 leaving them four strokes clear of Patti Anctil and Jan Carlson.
