Day 1 complete at 12th VSGA Youth Championship

PETERSBURG — Kilmarnock’s Colby Sullivan fired a 3-under-par 69 Monday at the Country Club of Petersburg to take the 18-hole lead in the boys 12-13 age division at the 12th Virginia State Golf Association Youth Championship.

Sullivan, 13, holds a one-shot lead over a pair of competitors who returned 2-under rounds of 70: Penn Laird’s Ryan Slonaker and Virginia Beach’s Carson Poulos.

Portsmouth’s Jonathan McEwen was two shots back after posting a 1-under 71. Roanoke’s Owen Bright rounded out the top five with an even-par 72.

Suffolk’s Faith Mya Garcia holds the 18-hole lead in the girls 12-13 age division thanks to her opening-round 74. She’ll take a two-shot lead into Tuesday’s second and final round over her twin sister, Hope Mia Garcia.

In the boys 10-11 age division, Christiansburg’s Jake Albert and Bristow’s Alex Bae were tied for the 18-hole lead after each posted an even-par round of 72. Toano’s Alejandro Carabello shot a 4-over 76 and is four back of the leaders.

In the boys 9-and-under division, in which competitors played nine holes, Brandon Sipe takes a commanding lead into Tuesday’s second round. He shot a 7-under 29 and has an eight-shot edge over Fairfax Station’s Ethan Evans, who returned 1-over 37.

Sullivan made three birdies during his bogey-free round to take the lead in the boys 12-13 division. Slonaker made an eagle and three birdies but also had three bogeys on his card. Poulos finished with four birdies and two bogeys.

Faith Mya Garcia made four birdies, including a string of three in a row at one point, during her round. She also had six bogeys. Her twin sister made a pair of birdies at Nos. 9 and 10 but had six bogeys on her card as well.
