BERLIN, Md. — Staked to an early lead thanks to a strong showing in Saturday’s four-ball matches, Virginia defeated Maryland 20-16 to win the 20th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Matches this past weekend at Ocean City Golf Club.
The Virginia State Golf Association Team retained the Poindexter Cup and increased its lead in the overall series to 16-3-1. Virginia won in Maryland for the first time since 2012.
Virginia took an 8-4 lead after Saturday’s four-ball matches, and the teams evenly split 24 points in singles competition on Sunday.
Three points were at stake in each match—one for the winner of the front nine, one for the winner of the back and one for the overall match winner.
On Saturday, the Virginia sides of Diana Domenech (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) and Naomi Mitchell (Sewell’s Point GC) and Kendall Turner (Greenbrier CC) and Becca DiNunzio (VSGA JGC) swept all three points from their matches. Tatum Walsh (VSGA JGC) and Rory Weinfurther (Independence GC) won the front nine and overall points in their match, putting Virginia in control heading into Sunday.
Turner and Weinfurther swept their respective singles matches for six of Virginia’s 12 singles points. Danielle Suh (VSGA JGC) won 2 ½ points in her match with Maryland’s Lauren Artis, and Walsh took two of three points against Maryland’s Sophie Simon. Victoria Tip-Aucha (VSGA JGC) managed a point in her match against Maryland’s Bailey Davis, and Mitchell secured a half point in her match with Jenny Hua.
Maryland’s Aneka Seumanutafa and Faith Choi swept their singles matches to account for six of Maryland’s 12 points.
The Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Matches return to Virginia next summer. The site will be determined at a later date.
