DANIELS, W. Va. -- The Virginia State Golf Association's 14-player team defeated its counterparts from the West Virginia Golf Association, 19.5-8.5, to win the 40th Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches and retain Ye Old Feudin' Stick.
Virginia's winning margin was the largest in the series since the current scoring format went into place in 2016. Virginia extended its unbeaten streak in the matches to 13, having won every event since 2009 save for a tie in 2018. Virginia leads the all-time series 34-4-2.
West Virginia jumped to a 4.5-2.5 lead after Saturday morning four-ball action, but the lead was short lived. Virginia swept the seven afternoon foursome matches to take a 9.5.-4.5 lead into Sunday singles. Virginia then won 10 of the 14 available singles points to cruise to victory.
Four Virginia players went a perfect 3-0 in their matches, all in the senior ranks: Buck Brittain, Jeffrey Klatt, Steve Serrao, and Robert Bradshaw. Additionally, regular Justin Young went 2-0-1. Virginia clinched the victory when Serrao topped Pat Carter 4 and 3 in singles action on Sunday.
The Virginia-West Virginia Matches will return to Virginia in 2025 at a site to be determined.
