LEXINGTON -- Led by two strong rounds from individual medalist Ayla Browning, Christopher Newport posted a two-day aggregate total of 48-over 624 to claim a three-stroke victory over Southern Virginia University in the 5th Virginia State Golf Association Women's Intercollegiate Championship.
The event, which concluded on Tuesday at Lexington Golf & Country Club, featured seven Division III programs from across Virginia.
Browning carded rounds of 74 and 73 for a two-day total of 3-over 147 to claim the individual medal, beating out Virginia Wesleyan's Juliette Coffey, who posted rounds of 75-74 for a two-day 149. Bridgewater College's Sophia Martone finished alone in third at 73-78--151; Sydney Richards of Southern Virginia was fourth at 79-73--152; and SVU's Hallie Western rounded out the top five at 72-83--155. Western's opening-round 72 was the only even-par or better round recorded over the tournament's two days.
Browning's second-round 73 included three birdies and four bogeys. She parred the final three holes to remain clear of Coffey. CNU also benefited from a second-round 77 from Alex Delgado. The Captains trailed SVU by seven strokes heading into the second round. CNU posted three rounds in the 70s on Tuesday, while SVU posted three rounds in the 80s, enabling the comeback.
This marks CNU's third victory in five Women's Intercollegiates. The Captains won in 2019 and 2021 and had the individual medalist in both years.
