Day 2: Guerriero wins first VSGA championship

Williamsburg -- Dennis Guerriero improved on his 1-under 71 from the first round to win the overall title at 7th VSGA Net Amateur Championship by five strokes on Tuesday. He shot 7-under 71 on Tuesday to round out his final score, which were the top scores on both days. This year's Net Amateur Championship win was Guerriero's first VSGA championship victory, but he never felt like he had to get a "monkey off his back." After his round, Guerriero mentioned taking advantage of the nice weather on Tuesday to capitalize on his leading score.

"What a big difference," Guerriero said. "Yesterday [Monday] was unbelievably cold and rainy and it was just very uncomfortable for most of the players. Today was just so nice." 

The sunny and 71-degree conditions on Tuesday were a stark contrast from the rainy and cold weather on Monday. 

Guerriero had previously only played at Kingswood Resort during his practice round for this championship, but his lack of experience with the course wasn't noticeable at the 7th VSGA Net Amateur Championship. Guerriero said he just had a feeling that this would be a "special event" for him. Guerriero said he tried to play "a little bit defensive" after his score on Monday. After recording double bogies on the 17th and 18th holes during the first round, he recorded a par and birdie, respectively, on those same holes to finish out his tournament. 

"I didn't do anything too crazy [on Tuesday]," Guerriero said. "The pressure was on the field, not me, so I just took my time and made sure I made good swings and putts." 

Rounding out the field, David Dooley won the 50-64 division after finishing the championship 3-under 139. Minh Huynh won the 49 and under division, bouncing back with a 4-under 71 on Tuesday after shooting 9-over 71 during his first round -- finishing with a score of 5-over 147. Huynh snuck by Brian McCullough who finished with a score of 6-over 148. In the Ladies' division, Donna Bohlin led the way after shooting 3-over 71 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 10-over 152.

Notable

• Mark Hartney became the first adaptative player, playing from the seated position in a VSGA championship this week. He finished with a net score of 16-over 158 to round out his historic appearance. 
• Tuesday's victory was Dennis Guerriero's first VSGA championship. 
• Guerriero recorded birdies on holes 3, 7, 9, 10, 15 and 16 on both days. 
• 49 and under winner, Minh Yunh, and Douglas Macpherson both recorded eagles on the 16th hole on Tuesday. 

Day 1: Guerriro takes lead 

Williamsburg -- Dennis Guerrio of Blue Ridge Country Club took the 18-hole overall lead at the 7th VSGA Net Amateur Championship at Kingsmill Resort on Saturday. Guerrio posted a 2-under net total of 69 despite recording double bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes. He also leads the 65 and over division. Guerrio holds a two-stroke lead over David Dooley, who leads the 50-64 division. 

Thomas Sutterfield leads the 49 and under division with a 4-over 75 and Debbie Allen leads the Ladies' division with a 3-over 74.
