LAUREL FORK -- The Carolinas Golf Association extended its lead in the 65th Women's Virginias-Carolinas Matches thanks to a strong showing in Pinehurst Modified Alternate Shot play on Tuesday at Olde Mill Resort. Thanks to a seven-point edge in Tuesday's matches, the Carolinas will take a 42-30 lead into Wednesday, the final day of the event which will feature 24 singles matches.
Five different Carolinas' sides secured all three available points (front nine, back nine, overall) in winning matches on Tuesday, helping the Carolinas to a 21.5-14.5 margin in the matches. Kerry Rutan/June Wang, Toni Notaro/Sarah Phillips-Durst, Pam Prescott/Chrissie Spidell, Mary Kathryn Talledo/Smith Knaffle, and Katie Kirk/Emily Rapp all secured three-point wins, while Victoria Cook and Kayla Dowell won 2.5 points in their match.
Two Virginia sides secured the full allotment of three points: Natalie Easterly and Joan Gardner, and Erica Whitehouse and Julie Shin. Two other sides secured two points: Katie Cox and Linda DiVall, and Susan Glasby and Cathleen Wong.
In Pinehurst Modified Alternate Shot, both players on a side tee off before the side chooses which ball to play. If Player A's ball is selected, then Player B plays the next shot, and the players alternate until the ball is holed.
The Women's Virginias-Carolinas Matches features players from the Virginia State Golf Association and West Virginia Golf Association squaring off against players from the Carolinas Golf Association (North and South Carolina).
The Carolinas have won 10 of the last 11 meetings in the series, with the exception being the Virginias' 81-63 win at Spring Creek Golf Club in 2017.
