BETHESDA, Md. — For the first time in event history, Maryland has successfully held onto the Poindexter Cup.
Maryland won the Sunday singles session and defeated Virginia 6½- 5½ at Kenwood Golf & Country Club to win the 24th Maryland-Virginia Junior Girls’ Team Matches, marking the first time Maryland had won in consecutive years. Maryland won last year’s matches 8-4 at Stoney Creek at Wintergreen Resort.
Virginia leads the all-time series 18-5-1.
Virginia led 2½-1½ after Saturday’s foursome matches. Virginia’s Katie Park and Sue Lee defeated Fannie Sukhumparnich and Alice Zou 3 and 2 in the final match. The first three matches all ended in ties.
On Sunday, Maryland won five of the eight singles matches to secure the victory. Megan Kirkpatrick, Iren Kim, AnPhi Le, Sukhumparnich and Zou all won their matches for Maryland. Lee, Kathryn Ha and Katie Vu won their matches for Virginia’s three points.
