PETERSBURG—The duo of Trey Marrion and Xander Goboy shot a blistering 10-under-par 62 on Sunday at the Country Club of Petersburg to rally for a three-shot victory in the 9th MAPGA/VSGA Junior Four-Ball Championship.
Marrion and Goboy finished the 36-hole championship at 14-under-par 130, three shots clear of first-round leaders JJ Powell of Midlothian and Rylan Shim of Centreville, who shot 63-70—133. Marrion and Goboy—both from Chesapeake—shot 68 in Saturday’s first round before taking control of the event with Sunday’s 62. They entered the second round trailing by five strokes.
Marrion and Goboy became the first repeat winner of the MAPGA/VSGA Junior Four-Ball Championship, and for the second straight year, the duo earned an exemption in the VSGA Four-Ball Championship, which will be held May 16-17 at Bay Creek Resort in Cape Charles.
The Marrion/Goboy duo posted 31s on each nine on Sunday, finishing with 10 birdies and no bogeys. On No. 2, Goboy made birdie when his partner was out of the hole. Marrion returned the favor on No. 8, making a birdie 3 when Goboy was out of the hole. Goboy also saved par twice (on Nos. 12 and 13) when Marrion was in for bogey.
“I really enjoy playing with him,” Marrion said afterward. “He’s a great friend of mine. It’s just a blast. I’m so appreciative of the opportunity to play with him.”
After finishing with nine birdies and no bogeys on Saturday, Powell and Shim never got going on Sunday. A bogey on No. 9 left them at even par for the day at the turn. They used a Shim birdie on 11 to get back under par but a bogey on No. 12 left them at even again for the day.
Blacksburg’s Major Ewing and Jake Albert shot a two-day, 9-under 135 and finished alone in third, two shots clear of fourth-place finishers Joe Johnson of Leesburg and Logan Reilly of Lovettsville. Three sides tied for fifth at 5-under 139: Roanoke’s Nate Faulkner and Cabell Faulkner; Richmond’s Garrett Kuhla and Chesterfield’s Haleigh McPeak; and Chantilly’s Matthew Pack and Broadlands’ Benjamin Baker.
