WILLIAMSBURG -- Miller Carr and Rebecca Sun, both from Virginia Beach, claimed wins in the 7th Virginia State Golf Association Junior Golf Circuit Championship, held this past Saturday and Sunday at Williamsburg National Golf Club's Jamestown Course.
In the Boys Player Rankings Division, Carr posted a two-day aggregate total of 8-under-par 136 to come from behind to win the championship. Carr entered Sunday trailing Fredericksburg's Grayson Wood by three strokes after Carr posted an opening-round 71. Carr caught fire on Sunday, returning a 7-under 65 to rally for the victory. Wood shot 68-71--139 and finished three shots behind Carr. Williamsburg's Austin Smith was third at 71-70--141, and Richmond's Talon Dingledine and Ethan Snow posted two-day 142s to tie for fourth.
Carr kept a clean scorecard on Sunday, finishing with five birdies and an eagle. Carr trailed Wood by two shots heading to the back nine but immediately forged a tie for the lead with a birdie on No. 10 as Wood made bogey. Wood regained the lead with a birdie on 11. Carr squared things with his eagle on No. 14 as Wood made birdie. Carr grabbed the lead for good with a birdie on 15. Carr played the final four holes at 2 under while Wood played the same stretch at 1 over.
Due to lightning on Saturday, the Girls Player Rankings Division was reduced to 27 holes. Sun led from start to finish and shot a 2-under 106 (35-71) to finish eight shots clear of her closest pursuer, Chesapeake's Hanna Lowery, who shot 38-76--114. Yorktown's Lily Hall shot 39-76--115 and finished alone in third.
Sun made three birdies and an eagle on Sunday, working around two bogeys and a double bogey to post her 1-under 71.
