NEWPORT NEWS — Playing on its home course at James River Country Club, the Christopher Newport University women’s golf team posted a 21-shot victory in the 2nd VSGA Women’s Intercollegiate Championship, which concluded on Tuesday.
CNU won the title in the inaugural event in 2019. The Captains set a program record for one-day scoring by posting a 16-over-par 304, besting the previous mark of 313 set in 2018. Over the two days, CNU shot 622 to finish well ahead of the University of Lynchburg (643) and third-place finisher Bridgewater College (685).
CNU entered the second round with a six-stroke advantage over Lynchburg before pulling away. All five CNU players finished inside the top nine on the leaderboard.
Captains senior Erica Whitehouse repeated as individual medalist with a two-day aggregate 5-over-par 149, two shots better than teammate Shreya Ganta, who backed up an opening-round 79 with an even-par 72 on Tuesday.
Lynchburg’s Emily Erickson took third at 81-74—155, followed by Hornets’ teammate Emily Brubaker at 80-81—161. CNU’s Lauren Sims (85-77—162) and Lynchburg’s Ivy Foran (80-82—162) tied for fifth individually.
