WILLIAMSBURG — Led by individual champion Robb Kinder’s 4-under-par 104, Christopher Newport University won its second straight Virginia State Golf Association Intercollegiate Championship, held Wednesday at Williamsburg National Golf Club.

CNU finished with a team total of 437, 11 strokes clear of runner-up Bridgewater College to win its seventh title in the event. Randolph-Macon College took third with a team total of 454.

The event, originally scheduled for 36 holes, was shortened to 27 holes due to darkness. The VSGA Intercollegiate featured seven Division III schools in Virginia, with both CNU and Hampden-Sydney entering two squads in the competition.

Kinder, a member at Williamsburg Golf Club, shot an even-par opening round 72 before torching the front nine of Williamsburg National’s Jamestown course in his second round. After starting the second round with a bogey and a par, he played the next seven holes at 5 under, making three straight birdies on holes 3-5 and adding an eagle on the par-5 7th.

Alex Price (74-35—109) and Carrter Morris (75-35—110) were second and third, respectively, for CNU. Aidan Baron contributed a 77 in the opening round and Kevin Quinto posted a 37 in the second round.

University of Mary Washington’s Sebastien Bonte was second in the individual championship, posting a 1-under par 107. Bridgewater’s Ronnie Uszenski shot an even-par 108 to take third. Price and Randolph-Macon’s Austin Brooks each posted 1-over 109s to tie for fifth.

The VSGA Intercollegiate was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic. CNU defeated the University of Lynchburg in a playoff to win the title in 2019. Kinder became the third Captain to win the individual title, joining David Rabil (2016) and Chris Kline (2001).
