SPOTSYLVANIA -- Fairfax's Patrick Normyle (VSGA eClub Alexandria) posted a two-day aggregate net score of 135 to win the overall title at the 1st VSGA Net Amateur Championship, held at Fawn Lake Country Club.

The event is the first VSGA championship that utilizes a player’s Handicap Index. The competition was open to VSGA members of all ages who hold an active GHIN number issued by a licensed VSGA member club in good standing and who meet the USGA Rules of Amateur Status. Each player’s Handicap Index as of Sept. 20 was used for the competition, and players received 95 percent of their course handicap. The maximum playing handicap was 36.

In addition to an overall champion, winners were crowned in four groups: Men 49 and under, men 50-64, men 65 and over, and ladies.

Normyle, a 19 handicap who shot a net 73 in Monday's first round, posted a gross 81 for a net 62 in Tuesday's second and final round to surge to the top of the leaderboard. Normyle made two net eagles and nine net birdies in posting his score. He finished seven shots clear of runner-up Casey McCullough (Shenandoah Valley Golf Club), who followed up his first-round net 67 with a net 76. Clarence Smith (VSGA eClub Alexandria) finished third after posting 76-68--144.

McCullough, a 14 handicap, cruised to a 10-shot victory in the men's 49 and under division over Joseph Moody (Mill Quarter Plantation), who shot net 74-78--152. Glynn Dexter (Australian Embassy Golf Club), a 20 handicap, shot net 84-72--156 to take third.

Dale Trexler (VSGA eClub Fredericksburg) was the winner in the men's 50-64 division after shooting 71-78--149. Smith took the title in the men's 65 and over group.

Amy Phelan (1757 GC), a 5 handicap, shot a net 74 on Tuesday to rally past Marie Anderson (Army Navy CC) for the ladies' division title. Phelan posted a two-day aggregate 151, three better than the 154 shot by Anderson, a 10 handicap. Katie Fox (Gauntlet GC) finished in third at 157.
