WILLIAMSBURG — After the first day of the 14th Virginia State Golf Association Youth Championship, held at Kingsmill Resort’s Plantation Course, Jake Albert and Alexis Danielle Goboy hold commanding leads in their respective 12-13 age groups after 18 holes of competition.

Albert, a 13 year old from Christiansburg, returned a 4-under-par 67 Monday to take a three-stroke lead in the boys 12-13 flight. Boones Mill’s Carson Moore, 13, was the only other player in the flight to break par, posting a 1-under 70. Barboursville’s Carter Knick, 12, stands in third after his 4-over 75.

In the girls 12-13 flight, Goboy, a 12 year old from Chesapeake, will enter Tuesday’s second and final round with an 11-stroke lead over Chelsea Kim of Chesapeake and Lily Hollberg of Moseley after posting a 4-over 75.

After a bogey on No. 2, Albert was 5 under for the rest of his round. He made birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 to get back into red numbers, then added birdies at Nos. 9, 12 and 16. Moore’s round was more adventurous, featuring four birdies, an eagle on No. 18, three bogeys and a double bogey.

Goboy made the turn at 4 over and played even-par golf the rest of the way, making back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16.

The best score of the day came from the boys 10-11 flight, where Yorktown’s Brandon Sipe posted a 5-under 66 to take a seven-stroke lead into the second round. Glen Allen’s Alison Oh holds a one-stroke lead in the girls 10-11 flight after posting an 86 on Monday.

Sipe, a past winner of the 9-and-under flight at this event, made seven birdies—including three straight on holes 12-14—against two bogeys.

In the 9-and-under flights, where competitors play nine holes per day, Arlington’s Charlie Wisniewski shot 42 and leads the boys division by one stroke over Virginia Beach’s Hunter Stanton. In the girls division, a pair of Virginia Beach golfers—Rose Hall and Ada Inderlied—shot 39 to tie for the lead. They’re two strokes clear of Chesterfield’s Jasmin Limm.
