PINEHURST, N.C. — For the second year in a row, Virginias’ Junior Boys Team has taken home the victory in the 38th Virginias-Carolinas Junior Team Matches by securing nine out of the 16 available points.
The Virginias team started the weekend hot winning all four four-ball matches on Saturday morning at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C. The Carolinas team stormed back in the foursome matches, winning three in a row, with Mason McCoy (Virginia Beach National GC) and Matt Moloney (Westwood CC) snagging the lone victory in the foursome matches to maintain a one-point lead.
The weekend concluded with eight singles matches. It started off with Carolinas’ Zach Adams gaining a victory over Daniel Goode (Wytheville GC) to pull the Carolinas team within one point. Matt Moloney and Cullen Campbell (Riverfront GC) then responded by winning their matches, with Maloney winning 3 and 2 and Campbell winning 5 and 3, putting Virginias back up by three.
Carolinas then won three of four of the next singles matches, and with the last match of the day coming up, had an opportunity to tie up the overall score. Virginias’ Charlie Kennedy (Richmond CC) faced off with Tyler DeChellis in the final match of the weekend, with DeChellis going 1-up early on No. 4. Kennedy responded by winning back-to-back holes to go 1-up. Kennedy built on this lead to win 2 and 1 and secure the victory for the Virginias team.
