NEW KENT -- The side of Andrea Miller (Glenmore CC) and Harry Thomas (Kinloch GC) posted an 8-under-par 64 on Monday at The Club at Viniterra to claim victory at the 7th Virginia State Golf Association Mixed Four-Ball Tournament.
Miller and Thomas were tied with Shannon and Michael Brennan (River Creek Club) at the end of the round but won on a match of cards.
Those two sides finished a shot clear of Abby Portyrata (Laurel Hill GC) and Adam Houck (The Federal Club), who shot a 7-under 65. Grace Anne Braxton/Jon Hurst (Fredericksburg CC) and Lindsay Wortham (CC of Virginia)/Tim Vigotsky (Robert Trent Jones GC) each returned 6-under-par 66s.
The Brennan combo won the net division title, posting an 11-under 61. Martha and Mark Raper were second at 10-under 62.
The event featured a shotgun start. Miller and Thomas started on 18 and got going early when Thomas made birdie on the 432-yard par 5. The side added birdies on Nos. 3, 5, 7, 13 and 17. Miller made an eagle on the par-5 15th hole.
The mother-and-son Brennan combo opened on 17 and made three straight birdies to jumpstart their round. They added birdies on Nos. 5, 7, 9, 14 and 15 to finish at 64.
Portyrata and Houck were in the mix but a bogey on the par-4 9th hole left them a shot behind the two leaders.
