DANIELS, W. Va. -- In the closest Women's Virginias-Carolinas matches in six years, the 24-member Carolinas squad rallied from a three-point deficit entering Wednesday's singles matches to claim a 75-69 victory at The Resort at Glade Springs' Stonehaven Course.
The six-point margin of victory was the closest in the series since 2013, when the Carolinas won 56-52 at Stonewall Resort in West Virginia. The Carolinas won for the ninth time in 10 years and extended its lead in the overall series to 39-24.
The Carolinas won Wednesday's singles session 40.5-31.5. In each of the 24 matches, three points were available, one each to the front-nine winner, back-nine winner and overall match winner. The Virginias team, comprised of players from the Virginia State Golf Association and West Virginia Golf Association, won the four-ball session 19-17 and the Pinehurst Modified Alternate Shot session 18.5-17.5.
The Carolinas team, comprised of Carolinas Golf Association members from North and South Carolina, swept six of the 24 matches on Wednesday, accounting for 18 of its 40.5 points on the day. Kendra Muir, Lea Anne Brown, Kim Briele, Rachael Mast, Madison Moosa and Gracyn Burgess all secured three points in their respective matches by winning both nines.
The Virginias squad recorded three such wins Wednesday, with Shelley Savage, Abigail Portyrata and Mariah Hopkins all collected three points. Rachel Walker also collected three points when she won her match by default.
For the week, Portyrata led the Virginia team by securing all nine possible points available in her matches. Savage finished with seven points, Hopkins with 6.5 points, and Walker and Mallory Hetzel each finished with six points.
