Virginia Beach's Roger Newsom, a two-time State Open of Virginia champion, posted a 3-under-par 67 at the Omni Homestead Resort's Cascades Course Monday to earn medalist honors at a qualifier for the 2019 U.S. Senior Open.

Newsom finished his round with five birdies and two bogeys and was four strokes clear of the other qualifier from the site, Ray Morton.

Morton earned that spot in a playoff with Paul Simson, who also shot 71 and will be the first alternate. Tazewell's Buck Brittain emerged from a five-person playoff to earn the second alternate spot after shooting 72.
