Slonaker duo wins 1st VSGA Parent-Child Championship

ZION CROSSROADS — The father-son combination of Chris and Ryan Slonaker posted a gross 13-under-par 59 Wednesday at Spring Creek Golf Club to win the overall title 1st Virginia State Golf Association Parent-Child Championship.

Chris (Spotswood CC) and Ryan (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) finished two shots ahead of Larry Groves and Dustin Groves (Glenmore CC), and David Brooks (Ballyhack GC) and Bella Brooks (Roanoke CC).

Four sides tied for fourth after returning 10-under-par 62s: Donald Frick (Pleasant Valley GC) and Ryan Frick (1757 GC); Phil and Alex Mahone (Farmington CC); Dick Bailey (Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech) and Kyle Bailey (Spring Creek GC); and Kevin Dill (Blue Hills GC) and Harold Dill III (South Riding GC).

The championship format was a two-person captain’s choice competition featuring an overall winner along with various age-group winners. The age groups were based on the youngest player’s age. It featured morning and afternoon shotgun starts.

Age-group winners:

  • 13 and under: Chris and Ryan Slonaker (59, -13)
  • 14-18: Daryl and Zack Russell, Farmington CC (65, -7)
  • 19-29: Kevin Dill and Harold Dill III (62, -10)
  • 30 and over: Larry Groves and Dustin Groves (61, -11)
