KILMARNOCK — The Virginia/Maryland squad rallied from a two-point deficit by winning the Sunday singles session to forge a 6-6 tie at the 17th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge, held this past weekend at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club.
The Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge features an eight-player team from Virginia and Maryland battling against an eight-player squad from North and South Carolina. With one point available per match, there were four four-ball matches on Saturday and eight singles matches on Sunday.
The Carolinas won the previous two meetings and had won all of the eight previous meetings held at a VSGA member club. The Carolinas lead the overall series 11-4-2. The last tie came in 2007.
The Carolinas got off to a hot start on Saturday, winning three of the four four-ball matches. The lone Virginia/Maryland win came from Becca DiNunzio and Julia Calomiris.
DiNunzio (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) also won her singles match, defeating Alexis Sudjianto 5 and 3. Calomiris added a singles win to her successful weekend as well, topping Katie Whitfield 7 and 5.
Amanda Levy picked up another win for Virginia/Maryland with a 4-and-3 win over Sasha Hayes. Midlothian’s Rory Weinfurther (Independence GC) defeated Abigail Schimpf 2 and 1. The final Virginia/Maryland point came from Jenny Hua, who bested Gracyn Burgess 1 up.
