Led by Christopher Zhang’s second-round 67, the Virginia team posted a two-day aggregate 870 to win the 9th Mid-Atlantic Junior Boys’ Invitational this past weekend at The Suburban Club in Baltimore.
The Mid-Atlantic Junior Boys’ Invitational features eight-player teams competing in two days of stroke play. The Virginia State Golf Association, Maryland State Golf Association and West Virginia Golf Association are represented in the competition.
Virginia posted a 17-stroke victory over West Virginia, which finished at 887. Maryland finished at 904, marking the first time that West Virginia has finished better than third in the event’s history. Virginia has won the last four Mid-Atlantic Junior Boys’ Invitationals.
Zhang’s second-round 67 was the best round of the weekend. The Blacksburg CC member shot a two-day 139 to win individual medalist honors by six strokes. He finished with five birdies and a double bogey on Sunday. Virginia’s Connor Creasy (Glenrochie CC) and Connor Johnson Jr. (CC of Virginia) shot 145 to tie for second with West Virginia’s Christian McKisic.
Jack Montague (Hermitage CC) returned 146 to tie for fifth with West Virginia’s Jacob Nickell. Maryland’s top finishers were Liam Powderly and Austin Barbin, who tied for seventh at 147 with Virginia’s Drew Brockwell (GC at the Highlands) and West Virginia’s Mason Williams.
The 10th Mid-Atlantic Junior Boys’ Invitational will be held next fall at River Bend Club in Great Falls.
