RICHMOND — The top of the leaderboard at the 68th Virginia State Golf Association has a distinct Old Dominion Athletic Conference feel.
Virginia Wesleyan posted a 5-over-par 289 in Monday’s first round at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club, giving the Marlins a three-stroke lead heading into Tuesday’s second and final round. Fellow ODAC members Lynchburg College (292) and Washington & Lee (295) round out the top three, and another ODAC school — Bridgewater — is tied for fourth at 296 with defending Intercollegiate champion Christopher Newport.
The VSGA Intercollegiate features 18 Division II and Division III teams—along with individual competitors from schools not fielding full teams—from across the Commonwealth.
Virginia Union, the tournament’s host, returned a 304 and is tied for ninth with The Apprentice School and Ferrum College.
Lynchburg College’s Josh Irby posted the best score of the day, a 3-under 68 that included six birdies and three bogeys. Christopher Newport’s Joey Corlett and Ferrum’s Damian Beasley are a shot back after returning 69. Virginia Wesleyan’s Jacob Laughlin and Kevin Duffy, Averett’s Niklas Grotterud and Hampden-Sydney’s Varun Yerremsetti are tied for fourth after shooting 1-under 70s. Yerremsetti is competing as an individual.
The tournament resumes Tuesday morning at Stonehenge with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
