In June, Rory Weinfurther and Rebecca DiNunzio were teammates on the Virginia squad that defeated Maryland in the 19th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Matches. Monday at the Golden Horseshoe’s Gold Course in Williamsburg, Weinfurther and DiNunzio partnered up and earned a spot in the 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
Weinfurther (Independence GC) and DiNunzio (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) posted a 6-under-par 65 Monday to snag the lone qualifying spot. The 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship will be held April 28-May 2 at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif. Weinfurther will be making her second appearance in a USGA championship, having qualified earlier this summer for the U.S. Junior Girls’.
Weinfurther and DiNunzio got off to a fast start Monday, making four straight birdies from Nos. 3-6 en route to a 5-under 31 on the front nine. They cooled off on the back, finishing with two birdies and a bogey on the inward nine to return 65. They finished three strokes clear of Cynthia Tu and Anne Yu, who made six birdies but had three bogeys and posted 68.
Tu/Yu will be the first alternate out of the Golden Horseshoe qualifier. Jillian Drinkard and Tatum Walsh, both members of the VSGA Junior Golf Circuit, shot a 2-over 73 and will be the second alternate.
The Golden Horseshoe will host a qualifier for the 2018 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship on Tuesday.
