Paced by David Rabil’s 11-under 133, Christopher Newport University dominated the field to win the 67th VSGA Intercollegiate Championship, which concluded Tuesday at Williamsburg Golf Club.
CNU’s five-man roster posted a two-day total of 579 and finished 16 shots clear of 2015 champion Ferrum College, which shot 595. Virginia Wesleyan College finished third at 607, followed by Virginia Union (613) and Mary Washington (614). The Mary Washington program is in its first season.
CNU won its first championship since taking home the title in 2001. The VSGA Intercollegiate Championship features Division II and Division III programs from throughout the Commonwealth.
Rabil (VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) shot 67-66 and was the only player in the field to shoot under par over the two days. Ferrum’s Lance Keiser (VSGA JGC) shot a 3-under 69 in Tuesday’s second round and finished at 145, 12 shots behind Rabil.
CNU also got strong performances from Kurt Funkhouser (Trump National GC) and Joey Corlett (Brambleton GC). Funkhouser shot 74-73—147, and Corlett returned 73-75—148. Davis Topping (CC at the Highlands) shot 157, and Chris Brugge (Hidden Creek CC) rounded out CNU’s scoring with a 159.
Ferrum got strong performances from Keiser, Brandon Bailey (Ole Monterey GC) and Drew Lagan (VSGA eClub Roanoke). Bailey shot 149 and Lagan posted a 150.
Other players who shot 150 or better were Virginia Union’s Joshua Mohun (The Crossings GC), who posted a 146; and Virginia Wesleyan’s Seth Johnson, who shot 150.
